About Us: The Newsly Times
The Newsly Times is a not-for-profit news publication based in New Zealand, published in English and Malayalam, in print and online.
Why another news site?
There is no shortage of news. What is harder to find is news that explains what a story actually means for you.
Our readers live in New Zealand and in India, and many have family, property, work or plans spread across both. A policy change in Wellington, a ruling in Delhi, a shift in immigration rules or currency markets: these are not distant headlines for our readers. They shape decisions about where to work, where to study, whether to move, and how to plan for the years ahead. We report world events with that question in mind. Not only what happened, but what it means for you today and what it is likely to mean tomorrow.
We also carry New Zealand news outward. Many of our readers are in Kerala and elsewhere in South India, and in the Malayali communities of the Middle East, the UK and Europe. They want to know what is happening in New Zealand, and they rarely get it in any depth. We aim to be that link, in both directions.
Why we publish in two languages
We grew out of a strong Malayali community in New Zealand, and that community remains at the heart of what we cover. But our stories should not stop there.
This community has achievements worth knowing about, and it also has needs and concerns that deserve a wider hearing. Publishing in English as well as Malayalam means those stories reach beyond the people already living them: to other communities, to English-speaking New Zealanders, and to the officials, employers and neighbours whose decisions affect us. A community that is only reported on in its own language is easy to overlook. We would rather be read by everyone.
Beyond reporting
Facts alone do not tell you what to make of a situation. Alongside our daily news coverage, we publish opinion and analysis from professionals, established journalists and subject experts: people who have spent their working lives in law, business, migration, health, education and public policy. Their perspective is what turns a news item into something you can act on.
Editorial independence and corrections
Our editorial decisions are ours alone. No advertiser, funder, political party or organisation has any say in what we publish or how we cover it. Opinion pieces carry the views of their authors, and we label them clearly so readers can tell reporting from commentary.
We will get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we correct the record promptly and openly rather than quietly amending a page. If you spot an error in our reporting, write to us at [corrections@newslytimes.co.nz] and we will look into it.
Who we are
The Newsly Times is published by IdeaWeb Technologies Limited, a registered charitable organisation in New Zealand (registration number CC61994), which also operates the community radio station Malayalam FM 104.6. As a charity, we have no shareholders and no commercial owners. Our work answers to our readers and our charitable purpose, and any surplus goes back into our journalism.
